Y Gymraeg yw iaith swyddogol yr ysgol a thrwyddi yr addysgir y disgyblion.
The official language of the school is Welsh and the medium through which the children are educated.
A wide range of educational experiences are planned in order to meet the individual needs of every child. Emphasis is placed on giving children direct experiences as stimuli to the teaching and learning process. The curriculum aims to be interesting, broad and relevant. The content of the curriculum is comprehensive and includes the requirements of the National Curriculum. The whole curriculum nurtures the child as an individual and provides the opportunity to develop intellectually, and at the same time develop an awareness of the community and fellow man, of the world and life.
EARLY YEARS - NURSERY / RECEPTION CLASSES - AGE 3 - 5
The work done in the early years is based on a thematic approach, and the theme is changed every term. Through the theme, a number of different experiences are given to the children. A thematic approach also lends itself to developing new vocabulary, as well as everyday conversational language. The majority of Under Five pupils are English speaking, and turn to the Welsh language for their medium of communication usually by the end of the year. The introduction, use and development of language is therefore emphasised in the Early Years. As a school, we are beginning to undertake preparations for the proposed introduction of the Welsh Assembly Government's new Foundation Phase, which is to be introduced into Nurserey classes in September 2008. This involves developing seven areas of learning through experiential activities, using play as a focus for learning, and Personal and Social Education and Well-being being at the heart of the curriculum.

KEY STAGE ONE - YEARS 1 & 2 - AGE 5 - 7
In Key Stage 1, the thematic approach is used to teach the National Curriculum, with subjects such as Science taught in blocks connected to the theme where relevant.
KEY STAGE 2 - YEARS 3,4,5 & 6 - AGE 7 - 11
In Key Stage Two, the National Curriculum is taught mainly by subject with sub-themes.
CORE SUBJECTS - Welsh, Mathematics, Science -and English (Key Stage 2 only)
FOUNDATION SUBJECTS - Physical Education, Religious Education, Art, Music, History, Information Technology, Geography and Design and Technology
Every subject follows a scheme of work, which is an outline of the skills studied in each area of every Key Stage. The teachers plan their lessons weekly using the school's schemes of work. A variety of teaching strategies are used to introduce work and teach the children in a way which answers the needs of each child as close as possible.
SPECIAL NEEDS EDUCATION
There is additional support for a child who has learning difficulties. The support available depends on the individual needs of the child. Each child receiving additional support is included totally in the main stream, but will be withdrawn in a small group or one to one for short periods of time. The Special Needs Co-ordinator (S.E.N.C.O.) monitors the whole process. The S.E.N.C.O., class teacher, and support teacher are responsible for writing an Individual Action Plan ( I.A.P.) for each child who is experiencing difficulties and is receiving support for any subject.
SPORT
The school aims to provide as many sporting opportunities as possible for the pupils. In addition to using the school yards and grassed areas, we also use the community amenities, such as the swimming baths and the rugby playing fields of Maesteg Park.
Extra-Curricular Activities
As a Welsh medium school, we encourage the children to participate in the Urdd activities. Where possible, we hold our own "adran" after school hours for years five and six, and participate in a wide range of competitions during the Eisteddfod season. Other clubs are held during lunch hours or after school, such as Netball, Football, Rugby, Science, Reading, Computer, Art, First Aid, Music and Drama, Recorders and Chess/Draughts. The older children also have the opportunity of a residential week-end at the Urdd Camp in Llangrannog. Key Stage Two pupils also attend courses during the week at the Ogwr Educational Centre which develop various aspects of the curriculum in turn. After school clubs are organised each September, and parents and pupils are informed of the times and days at the beginning of each school year. Any temporary changes are advertised through school post.
Homework
Homework is given at the discretion of the class teacher and is an extension of the child's classroom work. Parents are asked for their co-operation in assisting their children to complete tasks by supervising them, and ensuring that the work is returned to school on time.
Punctuality and regular attendance is expected at all times. It is essential to the educational development of the individual and order of the classroom and school. A book token is given to each child who has not lost a day's schooling throughout the year. Parents are welcome to visit, having contacted the school first in order to arrange a suitable time, and to ensure that the person they wish to see is available.
